When we heard that Toni Braxton’s next album would be called Sex & Cigarettes, we were nervous about what we were going to get.  But after hearing this track, we are more than eager for her to give us the whole thing.

While the track has a distinct country vibe to it thanks to the lazy acoustic guitar that starts it off, you can also hear her usual style that has served her well through the years as it slowly transitions to something much more R&B based.  Braxton sounds amazing.  We sometimes forget about her Lupus diagnosis and how, at times, the disease can have an effect on her vocals, but you would never know it by listening here.  If there is any autotune to help her out, it’s so minute you can’t hear it and she is still giving us sultry and invested despite all her years in the business.

The interesting thing about this is that Braxton reportedly said that the lyrics to this track were going to be a little on the raunchy, but they really don’t come off that way.  We get where that assertion could be coming from; if you frame this from a sexual standpoint instead of a relationship standpoint, leaving her like deadwood takes on a whole new meaning and she comes across as yearning for an incredible lover after a one-night stand that may have left him unsatisfied.  But really, most people are going to go with the relationship angle, though the extra layer of subtext does give the track some extended listenability.

We like this and are really hoping that the rest of the album is at least as good as this.  Now word on an official release date, but the album is expected to drop sometime in Q1 of 2018.

Lyrics:
Can’t believe that I’m home all alone
Doesn’t stop me from wanting to see you
Why the hell won’t you pick up your phone.

Hello?

Don’t know which way is up anymore
No excuses and nothing to cling to
Boy you’re shaking me right to the core

Just want to let you know
I won’t let this one go
You’ve got me down but I ain’t out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down but I’ll turn it round

All my friends say that “I told you so”
They ain’t making me feel any better
But it’s up and it’s on with the show

Got me aching inside of my skin
No excuses and nothing to cling to
You will pay for this state that

I’m in Just want to let you know
I won’t let this one go
You’ve got me down but I ain’t out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down but I’ll turn it round

Boy you gon’ see
A wiser me
And I won’t break down
Easily Hell no!

Just want to let you know
I won’t let this one go
You’ve got me down but I ain’t out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down but I’ll turn it round

Just want to let you know
I won’t let this one go
You’ve got me down but I ain’t out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down but I’ll turn it round
