Yuna – Chapters

When her duet with Usher, Crush, seemed to take off this past spring, we had hoped that would mean that the singer was reaching a wider audience than before.  While we might have been right in that assessment, it still wasn’t enough for her to really break through.

Chapters feels a little like what you would get if put Sade, Jhené Aiko, and Sia in a blender and pressed the mix button.  Ever track is exceedingly well written but accessible, the singer’s soft but confident vocals draw you in, and the production has just the right amount of diversity to keep things from getting boring but still has an overall smooth progression.  She give you some modern vocal styling, but there is a traditional foundation there that keeps her from sounding like everyone else out there.  The total project leaves you feeling a little contemplative but not down, which is never a bad thing to happen with your music.
