David Anthony – The Powerful Now

Most of us haven’t heard from David Anthony since he and Algebra Blessett pledged to love each other 4evermore, but he has come back to us and brought his A-game with him (although there was an album between this and As Above So Below).

This is another artist that isn’t afraid to take all the styles of music that have influenced him over the years and combine them into something uniquely soulful but very much a cohesive work.  His vocals are the centerpiece of this album because he just has that kind of voice.  The tone is between baritone and tenor and it just makes you melt from the moment he opens his mouth.  The overall mellow not what you expect from a man who has served his country in wartime (Desert Storm), but his focus on what he thinks is important in life is.  He speaks on hustler life, love, and finding your path with equal eloquence and determination, wanting to say his peace on everything and leaving you with some food for thought.  You come away from this feeling like a wise mentor just dropped some knowledge in your lap, but you’re not quite at the place you can understand it yet.  But you will–with repeated listens and time to digest it all.
