Wale is no stranger to the freelease, especially when he has an album coming out. So it should have been no surprise when he announced a new one and dropped it a few days later.
Summer On Sunset seems to be just that, a summer release that is meant to be about providing some hot sounds for the hot season. The production on this one is a far cry from Her Wave in that it’s lighter and has a distinct throwback/west coast feel to it. Most of the tracks fall into the mid-tempo range, but that doesn’t make them seem slow or less party playlist worthy. His lyrics are solid and almost never veer off-topic and his flow is the perfect medium between laidback and confident. You will find that this is one of those sets that you can listen to again and again.
Given Wale’s track record with mixtapes (with The Mixtape About Nothing being the only clear example where the album that followed it was worse), this has us looking forward to Self Made, Vol. 4 more than we were before. He may be the butt of a lot of jokes, but he always delivers on his music.
Sidenote: Yes; that is Jerry Seinfeld you hear leaving the message in the first track.
