Australian singer Yates has been around a for a minute and his track, Virtue, caused a bit of a stir thanks to his unique vocal quality and the western/soul mix of the production.
The follow-up, Mercury, has a different feel to it but shows that the singer has a wider range than we may have initial thought. The soulful track falls more into the Alt. R&B genre thanks to the moody production as the singer’s vocal delivery. About being unable to stop his blood from heating up due to how deeply in love he is, the imagery that is used here is actually quite good and, while some of it is well-trod (Love lingers like a poison in our veins), it combines for a unique and somewhat pessimistic take on love. It’s the kind of song that gets to you, especially if you’re going through a “should we, shouldn’t we” relationship.
