You may know Illinois native Nia Holloway best from her critically-acclaimed run as Nala in the Broadway production of The Lion King, but you might want to get used to knowing her as a pop/R&B vocalist in her own right.
Her new mixtape, A Vet and A Rookie, has the singer doing her thing over more mainstream production than many are used to her performing over. Listening to her, you might hear tinges of Miss Brandy Norwood in her delivery at times, but it never feels like an imitation. She commands the tracks well and never oversings or gets drowned out by the verbose beatwork.
The lyrics on the project are pretty good and never deteriorate into nonsense. While a little more variety in the production styles would have allowed her to more widely showcase her abilities, we understand that the point of this set is to get people think of her in a different way.
