It’s safe to say that Jacquees is all grown up now and his music is starting to reflect that. His vocals are exhibiting a higher level of control in comparison to his earlier work and his subject matter is more mature in both content and theme.
His latest freelease, Mood, is his first full release since signing to Cash Money. Featuring the tracks Pandora and Ex Games and features from the likes of Dej Loaf, Kirko Bangz, and Kevin Gates, this could have been a strong pay project with the right promotion. There is a cohesive production that lets every track flow into the next without any of them sounding alike. His vocals have a seductive edge but with an aggressiveness that doesn’t feel creepy or wrong and helps give his boasting and proclamations the air that he is willing to back them up. The lyrics are not going to be for everyone, as this a more modern take on R&B, but there is a broader appeal his sound than you might think upon first listen. We were skeptical of his move under Birdman, but he seems to have already sharpened his skills to take him to the next level of recognition.
While there are a few audio watermarks on some of the tracks, they’re not so distracting that they break up the flow of the songs.
