One of the things that we regret about our limited time to do music coverage is that we sometimes aren’t able to post about things that catch our ear and may take time to quantify into written posts.  That was the case with pH-1’s The Island Kid, which came out towards the end of last year and contained a good number of bops.

We hesitate to call Penthouse a typical K-trap track because there is a lot more to it than that, but it’s hard not to notice those elements permeating the song.  What saves it being something that is skippable are two things.  The first is combination of Sik-K and pH-1.  This isn’t the first time the two have collaborated, but we like the way the two play off each other.  They have a similar style in music thanks to their AOMG/H1GHR Music connection, but there is enough difference between them to makes for some interesting sounds when they come together.  The second is the production, which is a little smoother and brighter than you might expect, a bit of a pH-1 signature.  It gives the track a happy feel and, despite the braggadocio that it is no doubt spelling out, it still has seductive and friendly air.

As much as we like Penthouse, though, Communicate is the winner for us in this pairing.  The harmonies on this track from the start art just a nice touch and the piano/harp mixture with the trap flow is not exactly something new, but is rare enough that we are impressed by it every time it pops up.  Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Hoody has a feature on this track.  She provides a nice upper register counterpart to pH-1’s more gruff, tenor tones.  She also is more melodic in execution than him, providing a counterpoint to his delivery as well.  It is a good combination that we wish was a little longer but works just the same.

This was a nice way to end our night/start our morning.  Just the right tempo for both moods; with enough mellow vibe for the evening and enough bounce for the morning.  This is worth checking out, even if you’ve never heart of pH-1 before.

Sidenote:  There is something about the noticeable increase in strength in Hoody’s voice on this that has us aching for a new project from her.  She should stop leaving us hanging.

Lyrics:
We fight and argue a lot
The thorns that go back and forth make us lose our words
Busy only saying what each other wants to say
And the reason we argue now
We don’t even remember what it was
that caused the problem

Why do we have to fight?
Sometimes, we need to hold back our words
Even more to those who are close to us
Sometimes, we give each other deep wounds
Our hearts are scarred and tightly shut
We’re against each other and the fight’s on
And it’s always my fault my fault

So many things we need to talk about
Emotions we didn’t share
Our gratitude for each other, even our grievances
But we can’t love with words
Love, I don’t really sing about it no more
I don’t really sing about it no more

I don’t really have feelings no more
I don’t really have feelings
No more fights
No lies
Wrongs, rights
Overnight
We don’t stop

How can I know how you feel without communication?
Hurry and make time to share your heart with me

We all need to communicate
We don’t need any complication
We need communication
We need communication
We all need to communicate
We don’t need any complication
We need communication
We need communication

Yea, recently
The days we uselessly fight
Are getting engraved in our heads
More than our happy days

Every time I say something I tried to hold back
It’s the same, you close your eyes and ears each time
What I want is so small baby

You don’t know
You were wandering
And I tried to set you straight

Even when I’m next to you
You’re more far away than anyone else
I don’t wanna hurt anymore

We all need to communicate
We don’t need any complication
We need communication
We need communication
We all need to communicate
We don’t need any complication
We need communication
We need communication
We all need to communicate
We don’t need any complication
We need communication
We need communication
