Do you remember Playback? That may seem an odd question to ask about a group that debuted less than two years ago, but it’s a good one because the ladies have had very few chances to put themselves out there since then (which is even more odd since their first single was actually successful).
But it’s a new day and the group is at a new agency…one that wants to have them succeed.
This track, while not completely different than Playback, does a good job of modernizing the sound that they introduced themselves with. There is still that hint of nineties goodness in the production and the composition of the harmonies, but the overall style of the vocals is more current. There are interjections of trap sections within the more melodic tones and the rap lines feel more organic to the mood than forcing an entire verse where it doesn’t belong.
The vocals are really nice, too. The members all have separate tones (we can’t identify who is who yet, but we know there is a difference) and they have really solid harmonies despite the song itself not requiring complexity in that department. You can tell that the ladies are giving full voice as well; each not doesn’t sound watered down or breathy and yet it never sounds like they are straining either. There is a surprising amount of soulfulness in underlying tone that makes a song that could have been rather forgettable work and shows what they can do without being obnoxious about it.
It’s not quite as catchy as their debut, but it’s still pretty good.
And, just in case you thought that this would be it for a while, the group is already teasing their next single. This could be the start of something really good for Playback; they, at least, deserve the chance.

Lyrics:
Say you want me, you already know
Is this hard for everyone else? Or am I the only one?
Thinking ’bout you
Spending my days, always thinking about you
There’s something I haven’t told you
Feelings of love that I can’t hide
When I see you smiling
I want to tell you
I wanted you to know
Baby, making plans with you
And while I’m waiting for you
Baby, memories of walking with you
I’m thinking of you again today
I go I go You go You go
Will you come to me first?
I know I know You know You know
Just as you are?
If you feel the same way
You and I, we will change
Does your heart still feel nothing?
My heart is still the same
uh When I met you
I tried to act calm as I looked at you, you know
When I’m with you
I can’t hide it anymore
There’s something I haven’t told you
When I’m in front of you, I lose myself
Coincidentally passing
This strange familiarity
I want to know you
But you won’t let me you won’t let me yeah
Baby, making plans with you
And while I’m waiting for you
Baby, memories of walking with you
I’m thinking of you again today
I go I go You go You go
Will you come to me first?
I know I know You know You know
Just as you are?
If you feel the same way
You and I, we will change
I can’t fall asleep
I can’t fall asleep
I keep thinking about you
What are you doing?
Baby baby
I know I know You know You know
I want to know your heart more
I want to be sure today
Won’t you tell me now
Baby, making plans with you
And while I’m waiting for you
Baby, memories of walking with you
I’m thinking of you again today
I go I go You go You go
Will you come to me first?
I know I know You know You know
Just as you are?
If you feel the same way
You and I, we will change
Jimin Park of JYP 15& and After School Club helped compose this song, which explains why it’s so good! Of course, the girls in playback sang it really well too.
