Formerly known as Vincent Clark, HisStory comes with a project that is meant to bring the heat in the bedroom, but may have broader appeal than they gave it credit for.
The reason that this is more than a set of babymakers is simply that the tone of the project is not strictly aimed at that part of a relationship. There are songs about heartbreak here, songs about being lost in your emotions and not feeling the love, and songs about just being happy together. Plus the tempo of some of the songs don’t really lend themselves to lovemaking, even if they are still good songs on their own.
In terms of the track progression, this project is very bottom heavy. As we were listening to the first four songs, we noted how good their harmonies are and how well they sing, but thought that we would just be leaving this one to our SoundCloud subscribers. But with the cover of Untitled (How Does It Feel), the mood of the entire project changed and it began to have real personality. The productions got a lot stronger, the vocals became a lot more dynamic, and our ears really began to focus in. Truly the vocals are the selling point, even if the latter production choices make things a lot more interesting.
The lyrics are mixed and backloaded as well. The first few songs come off a very generic in their lines and don’t really stick in the mind. Things improve after the fifth track, but only H-E-A-R-T-B-R-E-A-K-E-R jumps out at you thanks to the spelling of words throughout without breaking the rhythm and forcing the listener to foucs in.
It’s a good first(ish) outing and we are interested to see how they improve on the next one.
Our favorite tracks are H-E-A-R-T-B-R-E-A-K-E-R and LoveOurLove. The most skippable track is Energy.
