I didn’t know how much I needed this until now!
There is something to be said for when songwriters and producers who care about their product collaborate; you can get some amazing things. That is all we can say about the flow of between the lyrics and production on the vibe-soaked Cave Me In.
First, the line distribution between the three primaries is excellent. Each gets a single verse of about the same length to get their point across and they balance each other well. And they do get their point across. Tablo’s verse is probably the least dense of the three, but all of them use the poetry and wordplay to describe love and how they all see it as precarious and dangerous; asking the woman in question to make them give in to the feeling and fall in love. The vocals carry the song effortlessly as Nam and Gallant (who doesn’t do his falsetto here in order for the more tenor Nam to really shine) offer beautiful tone and sweetness that match the theme and the beat. Tablo offers a sense of grounding, but it doesn’t depress the song as much as it does make you feel like you’re still in control of what you feel and are just waiting to be taken away.
Lophiile’s production is excellent. It gives you a little bit of that throwback R&B feel without sounding at all dated. It’s smooth and begs to be played out a window or with the top down so you can share the mood with everyone. It also dips and rises with the artist who’s in control, being a little upper melody-driven for Gallant, under-melody-driven for Nam, and more bass-driven for Tablo. It allows each on of them to shine and plays to their performance registers and strengths. And the climax combines all those sounds just as the three combine their voices. Amazing.
It’s all in English, so no need to translate, but the lyrics below come from Gallant’s SoundCloud page for this track. Enjoy!
these flies on my window are winners in a losing game
dip duck roll and hover they barely see a season change
while you and me live like birds on a power line, hands slipping and our fingers fried, god bless those northern lights and our own devices babe–
entropy multiplies, clock’s ticking and i’m mortified cause in the back of my mind, in the back of my hemisphere:
baby i want you to cave me in so maybe i won’t have to admit it
baby i want you to cave me in so maybe i won’t ask to forget it
Love has either got you over heels Or overdosed
It’s got you off your feet
Or on your toes
It’s got you out your seat Or in your place
It’s got you digging it
Or your grave
Love has got you mad about, or just about mad
Got you in a crush or it’s got you in a crash
What used to make your heart sing a hit, sing a smash
Will you make want to hit one and smash everything that you had into pieces
But love becomes clear when in pieces
What you couldn’t see n’ hear during peace is
Why your heart becomes years into pieces
Gravity makes wonders, but it also doesn’t seem to wait. Float like clouds on water, waves across an open plane. Cause you and me live like.
Birds on a power line,
hands slipping and our fingers fried,
god bless those northern lights and our own devices babe, entropy multiplies,
clock’s ticking and i’m mortified,
cause in the back of my mind, in the back of my hemisphere,
baby i want you, to cave me in, so maybe i won’t have to admit it,
baby i want you, to cave me in, so maybe i won’t ask to forget it
i want it i do,
i want it i do do do do
i want it i do
do ooh yea, i, ooh yea i do.
