Got my hands in the air in despair/Don’t shoot/I just wanna do good…

JAY Z gives us half spoken word, half rambling rap about coming to terms with how he sees himself and how others see him.  He bounces between the idea of mogul his fans see him as, the father his daughter sees him as, the husband his wife sees him as, and how they compare to what he sees in his mirror.  It is the language of a man who doesn’t feel he’s adequate enough to face the challenges of the world in front of him.  In this way, the song is not so much about those who have been those who have been lost as much it is an expression of apathy and despair.
