When it comes to Vixx, you never know what they are going to do next.  They started off with a dark and brooding sound accompanied by (somewhat) disturbing visuals and have gradually moved to a slightly brighter sound.  Their latest falls into a third category with Love Equation and is a throwback disco track that also, somehow, manages to sound like late 90s/early 2000s kpop.

Dynamite is the brightest track from their new single, Velos.  The track does start off a little meh before immediately buying itself back as the full production kicks in and the vocals fill out some.   The old-school beatwork brings the bulk of the energy to the song as the vocals are not up to that usual Vixx-style and seem subdued.  While that doesn’t kill the song outright, it does make it a harder sell at times.  The slow switch on the bridge, however, is stunning as the highlight of the track.

The one thing we can’t quite wrap our head around is exactly how dynamite title works in the song as a metaphor.  While it’s probably meant to team with the lines about wreaking havoc and making a mess, the thrust of the song is about jealousy over an ex moving on and just kind of throws things off a bit.  Of course, this is also a thing from that same era of kpop; interjected English lines that don’t make a ton of sense in the song overall.
