The latest signee to DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers label, Ella Mai is starting to come into her own with her new freEP.

Hailing from London, the singer made a splash last month when she teamed up with Ty Dolla $ign for the single She Don’t (which is included here).  Now she has brought five additional tracks as companions for a nice demonstration of her vocal style.  With her production choices going for the smoother side of Mustard’s catalogue, the singer’s brash yet melodic delivery is something different than a lot of female artists are going for now and it fits the lyrics that she chooses to use.

The content of her songs has a mixture of the confidence, strength, and unabashed honesty that you usually only get (convincingly) from male singers who fall more into the hip-hop categories.  There’s nothing sweet about her in this set and that fits the theme of moving on from heartache just fine.  While we hope that her future projects bring a little more of her London sensibilities to the L.A. sound, this is a strong introduction from an artist with a lot of potential.
