If you weren’t aware, it’s still BTS season.  The group has given themselves very little downtime during this promotion…which makes us wonder when they recorded this.

Taking aim at all the people who doubted they would be success because of their position in a label that was outside the Big 3, the rapline of BTS celebrates the fact that BigHit has been the most profitable label in South Korea this year and they are worldwide artists.  We would say that this is a subliminal shot across the bow at several people, but we think this is more a statement to people in general than anyone they have actually interacted with.  Not that there aren’t some shots in here.  The way that RM took on his verse is supposed to be an imitation of a particular rapper’s style and dumbfounded reactions from other groups are meant to reflect an actual interaction they had, but this seems like general braggadocio more often than not.

The three different flows on display are interesting in that is very easy not to like a particular section of the song because you don’t like the style its done in.  Each rapper takes on something so disparate from the others, you almost feel like these verses came from different tracks and were expertly combined together.  J-Hope’s almost monosyllabic flow is a good introduction as he starts the song off somewhat slow with each successive entry building the meter and the tension.  It’s clear a lot of work went into this and we can only wonder what this was originally meant for and was dropped from.

What really sells this song is the production.  J.Pearl from the now-disbanded History does his thing on the beat.  We love the influence of what sounds like a daejaeng over the rest of the more fluid and melodic undertones.  It gives each rapper the space to be different without any of them coming across as off-beat.

The interesting thing about this is the wordplay.  We should always expect South Korean rappers to use their own language to build wordplay off of, but it is interesting when we actually know enough to be able to decipher some of it.  The ways they use ddaeng in the track are as follows:

  • wrong, incorrect
  • the ding of a bell
  • gwang ddaengs – the high/highest score in the Korean card game Hwatu (18, 13, 38)
  • eoreum ddaeng – freeze tag
  • the way your face is puffy after sleeping right after eating ramen
  • an unexpected fortune

It can be a little fun to figure out which mean (or combination of meanings) they’re going for in each individual usage, but it does give the some solid added dimension…which gives a diss track a lot more staying power than something that stays at surface level.

We were hoping that, maybe, we would get this as either a download or an official release but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.  All this has made us want is another mixtape feature the entire rapline (after we get one from V; he’s got next).

Look into this mirror after washing your eyes and face
There is a hater of yours breathing right in there
