When the teaser for this track dropped, there were a lot of people who dismissed the title track as awful right then. The heavy autotune, the repetitious chorus, the mildly hilarious dancing…it seemed like most people thought it was going to be a joke.
We’ve got news for them, though; it’s not that bad.
No; it’s not their best title track and certainly not their best track, but it has a solid vibe to it. The worst part of the track really is the end of the chorus because the repetitious word and the heavy autotune is a little grating…but that becomes more catchy the more you listen. The rest of the track comes off as well as any other trap track (of which this is supposed to be a pop version). Actually…they comes off better because there are several places where they drop the robotics and let the natural vocals shine through and those are truly best parts of the track.
The production of the track is a lot more chill than you might expect given the excitement of the members when they’re performing. That goes in hand with their concept for this album, chill trap, and shows a lot more potential the track ended up having overall. The beatwork is robust without being overworked and has a solid progression to it that makes it build to the chorus and back down well when the next verse comes in.
If this is going to hugely disappoint anyone, it’s going to be Inner Circle who have been with the group since the beginning. This is about as far from 2014 S/S and Empty as things could get. While the new style they have been exhibiting since Taehyun left has brought them more in line with the general vibe of YGE overall, it is a major departure from their previous work (even the singles they dropped last year) and that big of a switch can’t help but alienate some fans.
As for the visual…we’re not really feeling it. The dancing, unfortunately, it the one thing that does look as bad as it did in the teaser. There are part of it that come across well with the intricate and small movements showing some skill. It’s when they get to the chorus and start descending into internet meme dances that it falls apart. Oddly enough, we heard the track sans video and actually liked it more than when we were watching. That should never happen because, ultimately, a visual is a martketing tool and you don’t need it to turn off your audience.
