There are a lot of things that you can say about Future…both good and bad.  One thing we’ll say is that he can be a damn good songwriter when he wants to be.  And when he wants to be is usually when he is writing for a female singer.  He and Rihanna have already had success with her track from ApologeticLoooooove Song, and this one might be up there with that one in terms content.

About two people who are rich, interminable screwups finding comfort in each other the only way they seem to know how.  The word structure here very poetic in terms of line length and  imagery, but it all does make sense in a very abstract way.  The most concrete section is also the most problematic in terms of theme and that’s Future’s verse about drugs, liquor, and money.  It makes sense in a way, but it is somewhat disconnected from the rest of the material.

If we had to guess, I would bet that this track was actually slated for inclusion on Rihanna’s ANTi at some point; probably when Four Five Seconds was still meant to be a part of the tracklist (it does fit in with that song sonically).  The slow, minimalist beatwork does lend to the idea that this track is somewhat incomplete but, again, that might have something to do with the production direction of the songs surrounding it.  The vocals are hit and miss, with Rihanna bringing melody to Future’s flat, autotuned style.  Future’s vocals are an odd fit for the track as they are so mechanical sounding and very different than all the other elements that present themselves throughout the track.

It’s not as strong a track as their previous collaboration, but it’s a song that is worth a few listens.

The lyrics are from Genius.

This track is available on Future’s second album in two weeks, HNDRXX, out now.

Lyrics:

Oooh, yeah

[Verse 1: Rihanna]
It was right
Even though it felt wrong
Nothin’ ever stopped you
From showin’ your progression suddenly

[Bridge: Rihanna & Future]
Broken lies
Driving backwards
Making all the wrong turns
Saying all the wrong words
Dodging angels

[Pre-Chorus: Future & Rihanna]
Oh, let’s not be alone
Let’s not be alone
Let’s be one
Oh, let’s not be alone
Empty thoughts fill the room
Breathe for me and I’ll breathe for you

[Chorus: Future & Rihanna]
Let’s be selfish, selfish, baby
Tonight
Tonight
Let’s be selfish, selfish, baby
Tonight, tonight
Tonight, yeah, yeah

[Verse 2: Future]
I just hit the liquor side of France
Currency exchange, lookin’ fancy
If that money dirty, make it dance
25 karats cost a mansion
Gold rose petals, bottle standin’
Came from the concrete, takin’ chances
Pop gold Ace like a Xanny
I just need the blessin’ from your family
Broken lies
Ain’t no love without us
It will die
Roses turn into dust
Every night
We gettin’ more popular
Wrong is right
When it comes to us

[Chorus: Future & Rihanna]
Oh, let’s not be alone
Let’s not be alone
Tonight, let’s be selfish
Selfish, tonight, tonight
Let’s be selfish, selfish, baby
Tonight, tonight
Tonight, yeah, yeah

[Outro: Rihanna & Future]
I’ll be selfish
Let’s be selfish
Ohh, ohh
Yeah, yeah
Ooooh, oooo-oooo-oooh
I’ll be selfish
Let’s be selfish
Let’s be
Let’s be selfish
Yeah, yeah
