Chrisette Michele is no stranger to the freelease game and she often uses those projects to experiment a little with something new or get fans used to a new sound.  This time is no different.  Steady Gang follows in the footsteps of Steady (included here) as showing off a little bit more of her fun side through her music and, for the most part, she manages to accomplish what she set out to do.

Where the freelease falls down is on song like Down In The DM and the better but still off Antidote when she attempts to rap.  Super Chris is adept at many different styles of music, but hip-hop is apparently not one of them.  There is something off about her flow and the tone of voice she uses (not confident or maybe a little too laid back) that just makes the energy of the songs fall off and really hard to listen to.  Luckily, things improve when she sings, but it still doesn’t always work as songs like Black Girl Magic are uncharacteristically lame in the lyrics department.  There are still gems on here, like her remakes of Don’t and Say It, that make this worth at least a listen, though, so it’s not like there’s nothing to enjoy.
