Taking on classics by The Isley Brothers, Natalie Cole, and Patrice Rushen and allowing the artists themselves to speak for what was going through their minds at the time they recorded them (or their signature hits), Ledisi proves that there will always be a place for R&B with her Nostalgia Movement.
Looking like it’s meant to be the first installment of a series, the songstress adds her own spin to these covers without taking away what made them so special to begin with. She did the smart thing and had the songs remixed slightly so that the productions sound a little more modern and match her vocal tones better. And, vocally, these songs are beautiful. Those who may be familiar with Ledisi’s rendition of Take My Hand, Precious Lord may be impressed by her use of more subtle power on these tracks.
It’s a lovely tribute from one singer to the ones that inspired her.
