The-Dream has just released a 42-minute short film that features 10 all new tracks.
This has to be some of the most interesting work that The-Dream has put out in a while. It still contains some of the money, cash, hoes feel that we have come to expect from him, there is also a deeper, more introspective side on display that goes for atmospherics and rich sound. It shows a side of him that we don’t really ever get to see and we’re really happy to see an artist grow and expand his point of view.
That being said, while this is certainly an ambitious undertaking from the producer, the biggest downfall of the project is that, without the visuals, most of the songs just don’t work as something to listen to. Most movie scores are non-diegetic; sounds that are heard by the audience but not heard by the actors and this score is definitely not that. At the same time, it’s not like a music video where the whole reason the visuals exist are to back up the notion of the song. This is an odd middle ground where neither the visual or the music exist without the other and, as such, are hard to separate. It’s not that the music is bad; it’s that it feels incomplete if you’re just listening to it.
