Calling attention to both the topics of domestic abuse and #BlackLivesMatter, Melanie Fiona’s new video may be minimalist, but it’s also very powerful.
Depicting Fiona battered and trapped in a box, she sings I tried being good/But it never works over a bluesy production. As she sings, real life headlines of domestic abuse and police abuse flash on the screen. While the lyrics were probably initially aimed to speak about a woman tired of love, the new direction is a perfect fit for the lyrics.
The visual itself brings to mind how the ideas of physically autonomy and freedom are often based on who is being victimized. This truly takes on the faulty the idea that someone “had to do something wrong” or “probably deserved it” when they ended up being hurt or killed by someone.
The singer’s new album, Awake, is expected to be released in early 2016.
