Does this track mean that a new Usher album is still in the works? We can only hope so.
A little over a year ago, Usher announced a tour and a new album. While The UR Experience seemed to go pretty well, we never got the album that Good Kisser and She Came To Give It To You was supposed to be on. As those songs languished on the charts, he teamed up with Migos and Juicy J for tracks that were radio-friendly but not all that good. Some of us thought that maybe Usher was looking at the end of mainstream success…and then we heard this.
Milk Carton has a the adult sound that he seemed to be going toward with the first two singles from last year. The production has a bit of a throwback sound and lacks a lot of the EDM overtones that dominated the singles from his last couple of albums. His vocals are dynamic and have him traipsing from tenor to falsetto at a moment’s notice. The lyrics are straightforward with the exception of the chorus, which brings in the milk carton metaphor because his woman is missing from his life.
It’s a good track with good R&B legs. We’ll have to see where this goes from here.
