Tweeting about this only a few hours before actually releasing it, Teyana Taylor’s new mixtape is an homage to 1994 R&B and shows just why she has so much potential to really break out.
With a full running time of less than 30 minutes, Taylor still manages to satisfy with her sensual and effective vocals on tracks about love and lust. Kanye West, Da Internz, JR Rotem provide some strong production bases around songs that came out in 1994 (Anniversary, Swing My Way, Poison, etc.). The lone feature is a verse on Who’s Gonna Make It Home by her boyfriend Iman Shumpert and, surprisingly, it’s solid enough to think that she didn’t just put him on the track because they have a relationship. The lyrics, while par for the course for these type of the songs, is solid and get their point across well.
The overall project is strong enough that it could have been a pay EP. The reason we think it isn’t is because Taylor is joining Chris Brown’s One Hell Of A Night Tour and she wanted some more recent material besides her album.
BTW, the movie sampled is Boomerang.
