Deborah Cox is experiencing a lover’s paradox. She wasn’t happy in the relationship but now she misses her ex terribly. While her head knows that she made the right decision, her heart is filled with all kinds of doubts about what she’s done. The Thadeuis Dixon production has an interesting feel to it as it’s an R&B ballad for most of its duration, but the bridges sound like they’re about to transition a light rock style. The effect works, though, because those are the moments when Cox chastises herself for ending a good thing. Her vocals are strong and emotional with the dynamic tones that we have come to expect from her running thoughout. Unlike her last single, this does not sound like she’s trying to imitate anyone; this is Deborah through and through.
This is the first official single from Cox’s upcoming album Work Of Art. The LP will be released August 15.
