You may not have heard of Obenewa, but she is someone you need to hear. Hailing from London, the singer also boasts piano and guitar skills as well as songwriting, making her a multi-musical threat. She is currently has a very small discography to her name (one EP and smattering of features), but she might have just gotten the cosign that will change that.
Her latest track came about almost by accident as a draft of the song was given to producer Machinedrum by a friend. Fortunately, he likes it so much that he just had to work the instrumental. Save Me is about the bad thoughts that run through your head that make you feel like you’re about to fail and can sabotage you. Obenewa’s vocals are top notch, powerful and soulful without too many runs to overcomplicate things. The mix of her voice and the beatwork is strengthened by the use of lush harmonies that give the song an ethereal quality in places. The lyrics are strong but accessible, telling the listener about something that they have likely experienced in a relatable way.
This is the first single from Obenewa’s upcoming EP, Wunderkind.
