When we reviewed Rich & Gorgeous last year, we were eager to hear what else JustBrown had to offer.  Now that their new album, The “R” In Bass, is out we think that there is a future for them in the industry with a little growth.  The production is varied and strong, with each track having a distinct feel that is appropriate to what their subject matters portray.  The duo have nice vocals that are used effectively and every line is delivered with energy.  The lyrics, while sometimes a too crass for consumption by a wider audience and mostly about sex and money, are solid enough and make sense in their own context.

The issue comes with track sequencing.  The project would come off as a better than average club album if it weren’t for the inclusion of the tracks Rich & Gorgeous, Vacancy, and Lullaby.  The tracks have a romantic feel and the listener can take them more seriously than the rest of the album.  Their inclusion, while likely a nice attempt to reach out to female listeners and the strongest tracks on the album, causes a whiplash effect when they play.  Of course, they also show the potential of duo as they demonstrate a more mature mindset.  We look forward to the next album to see where they take things.
