Jason Derülo and K. Michelle are being very bad. They are cheating together and, the worst part of it is, the person who’s going to get hurt is his best friend. This has to be one of the strongest tracks, vocally, that Derülo has ever had and that likely is the influence of K. Michelle. She shows strength in her vocals and forces him to do the same without the autotune that he often uses in his music. The thrumming production with its has both a seductive and a regretful quality as the two lament their involvement, blame it one the liquor, and then admit they would like to be together. The lyrics are simple but relatable as they work the gamut of emotions and don’t really try to justify the behavior with both admitting that what they’re doing is wrong. In a world where songs about infidelity seem to put the blame on the person being cheated on, it’s become a refreshing feeling to hear more songs where the people doing the cheating admit fault.
Derülo’s fourth album, Everything is 4, drops June 2.
