Listening to the single Toxic Party, you would be forgiven for thinking that all of Steph Sexton’s For Now freelease would be hip-pop; but, in fact, the product is far more alt. R&B in its sound. Most of the tracks are slow with Sexton taking on that sing-songy pseudo rap tone that has become extremely popular over the last few years. While Sexton’s vocals are nice, the delivery doesn’t really give her a chance to show off her talents. The lyrics make up for that in some ways, though, as many of the tracks go a little deeper than the average sex, money, party fare.
Especially check out our favorite track, Round Here. It’s a track about young women having their own identities and self respect. While the lyrics do get the subject a little muddled (the line ain’t bitches like me ’round here doesn’t quite fit), this is still a nice track for a little inspiration.
